Saturday evening in the beautiful lobby of the historic Rhode Theater the Kenosha Art Association held their “First Annual Advent Juried Art Show”. What a great success with many wonderful people attending the event that Brigitta put together. There was music playing in the background, lights strung around, Christmas trees, food and drink that made for a very festive occasion. Twenty One artists entered the competition with some exquisite art being seen.
This was also a chance to see the new Pollard Gallery opening, which provided an area for more than twenty local artists to show their ware along with the well known Pollard’s artwork. ExposeKenosha would like to applaud the Pollard Gallery for the new direction which will bring additional opportunities for local artists.
Our congratulations to the winners of the show:
- 1st prize went to Kathleen Laybourn for “Ressurection” that was done in oil
- 2nd prize went to Rebbeca Venn for “Gypsy Girl” that was done in conte
- 3rd prize went to Sue Wolff for “Morning Light” done in watercolor
- Honorable mention to Jessica Meyers for “Beggars Banquet” in mixed media
- The Peoples Choice Award also went to Kathleen Laybourn for “Ressurection.”
The judge mentioned that it was a hard decision, as there were so many quality pieces to choose from.
Thank you to everyone that attended.

November 25th, 2007 — Poetry, Writer
by Bill Schroeder

I worked with Marianne on the Coats for Kids program when she was a department head at Women and Children’s Horizon’s and recently found she had a book of poetry published this June. The title is “Cool Shade and Sweet Water.”
Normally, I’d start and end the interview with the same person, but not this one because I started out interviewing Marianne, but she quickly transposed into Namarine.
Marianne works as an Employment Support Specialist at the Ellsworth Prison in Union Grove, helping the women reintegrate into their communities. Namarine writes wonderful introspective Poetry. As Marianne spoke, Namarine became a powerful draw for me, a little like Kahlil Giban in his book “The Prophet”.

November 25th, 2007 — Digital Artist, Photographer, Writer
By Joe Barr

We first learned of Karen when she emailed Expose Kenosha.
“I am an artist that lives in Kenosha County and was not aware of a vibrant and active arts community.”
I emailed Karen, and later called her. Her enthusiasm for her art was contagious, and she was eager to share and learn with other artists.
Joe: Hi Karen. We just met, and I know very little about you. Why don’t you introduce yourself?
Karen: My name is Karen Griffin. I live in Salem, Wisconsin, and I’m an artist that is trying to promote herself.
Joe: How did you come to email Expose Kenosha, Karen?

Karen: There was as an ad on Craig’s List. That’s how I found Expose Kenosha. It was talking about writers and saying that writers were needed.
That’s why I sent the email. I wanted to be a writer and I said “Hopefully it’s a paying job, because I’m a starving artist”.
Joe: Well… The work is fun, and you would have good company, but the pay… Continue reading →

Lakeside Players, Inc. presents:
A Christmas Twist - November 30- December 15
A comedy by Doug Armstrong, Maureen Morley, and Keith Cooper
Director: Brandi Schuld — Kenosha,WI
Assistant Director: Laura Larson — Kenosha, WI
Sponsored by Southport Mechanical
Based on the Dickens classics, A CHRISTMAS CAROL and OLIVER TWIST, this side splitting satire makes a mockery of Christmas sentimentality by mixing up the characters from both famous stories. Characters include Tiny Twist, a composite of Tiny Tim and Oliver Twist, and Artful Annie, based on Orphan Annie and the Artful Dodger. This hilarious story will be a welcome relief to anyone who finds Christmas a grueling experience!

November 18th, 2007 — Visual, Model, Kenosha
by Tammy Peacy

“There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud became more painful than the risk it took to blossom”
- Anais Nin
The intent of this interview was for me to learn something new about a woman I know and admire. I also learned a few things about myself.
I attended an open draw in which Chelle Krome was the model. I wasn’t there as an artist, but as an observer, a learner. I thought I would be uncomfortable seeing an acquaintance sans clothing. I sat at the table, real artists on either side of me, and held my breath. As it turned out I was more shocked to see her without her glasses than I was to see her nude. And I actually did draw her (or something that could maybe be her if you’re squinting).
Her body was as she describes: the body of the mother of four children, the body that has nourished and nurtured; the body of a woman.
Tammy: So, the first question on my list is, did you grow up in Kenosha?
Chelle: Yes, I did.
T: Always lived here?
C: Um, I was born in Chicago, but that’s only because that’s where my parents happened to be living at the time. My mother is from here and my father is a Detroit Italian, which apparently has much connotation that I have never quite figured out.
