The Power of Creativity

Jeanette Stevenson knows the power of creativity. It is a power she calls on daily in her job; helping others create the lives they dream about. Two years ago Jeanette made the life changing decision to become certified as a Life Coach. It was her dream, and one she has never regretted.

For this interview Jeanette slid into the booth at Panera wearing a sweatshirt emblazed with the logo she designed. Everything she does with this job has meaning for her. This feisty, energetic woman is a powerful force and it is easy to see why people all over Kenosha and Racine are coming to her for support, encouragement and the chance to co-create their lives with her.
Most of us have heard of therapists, but Life Coaching is a title that is fairly new to the world. And so I asked her to describe what it is she does.

“For therapy you show up broken. For coaching you show up creative, resourceful and whole. You come because you are ready to make a shift in your life, ready to move toward the life you desire to live.”

And the ways in which she helps co-create this new life are quite unique and exciting. For instance, on January 26th she will be leading her annual Vision Board Workshop at the Spectrum Art Gallery in Racine. During the workshop you create a life vision map, like a “treasure map” she explains. You take photos and cut-outs that represent your dreams, visions, hopes and aspirations and you put them on a board as a visual reminder of the life you want. As you see this board every day, it keeps your dreams in front of you so that you can work toward them. In essence, you create a beautiful collage of what is in your heart.
Jeanette’s creativity doesn’t stop there. She has designed her own piece of jewelry that is under review by a company to be picked up this year for the national market. She also designed her own logo.
As we talked, I asked her how she’d come up with this vibrant logo design. “I wanted to have my signature on my own logo,” she said. “The process was like Art Therapy.” Jeanette sat down with local artist, Cynthia Hubble, for three hours one day drawing on scraps of paper what she felt and wanted, rather than speaking it aloud. What she came up with was then given to local artist Jurga Petkus who painted on silk and added that to other mediums such as crochet and felt. The result is a 3 ft. x 4 ft. hanging suspended by bamboo. A photo of that piece has been transferred to all of Jeanette’s Point of You business accessories and cards.

Knowing that everything she does has meaning, I had to find out what the logo was about – in her mind and heart. “The seeds at the bottom represent what lies dormant within us. And then, through coaching, you grow, like the stalk, toward a window of light. The light can be from within or without depending on your life’s goals. At the top of the stalk is a bud, not a flower, because I believe that we never fully bloom, we just continue to journey.”

She will also be co-leading a women’s weekend retreat with local writer and teacher Colleen Kappeler this April.

I’ve known Jeanette for many years. I watched her dream become reality to support others. She is one of the most creative, innovative friends I have ever had the great opportunity to know. She has a knack for intent listening and then the ability to pull ones thoughts together to form a vision, a goal. Anyone who wishes to make their hopes and dreams a reality would benefit by knowing Jeanette.

Jeanette is a fabulous Life Coach and person. I have gained tremendously more from just a few coaching sessions with Jeanette than ANY counseling I have ever received. Life coaching is the most positive, rewarding, and essential thing you can do for yourself AND your loved ones.
