When Maria Caravati decides that she wants something, she figures out how to go about getting it. Whether it be starting her own business almost ten years ago, or organizing the downtown festival Bloomin’ Days last summer, she isn’t going to sit around waiting for things to happen.

“The thing is that people do have ideas, but few will actually follow through and do something with their ideas,” says Maria. “It’s laziness. It is thinking someone else should do it. I say you do it. It feels wonderful knowing each of us can make a difference. Even if it is a small difference– that’s where it all begins. Now I understand that not everybody has the natural ability to organize an event, but team up with somebody who does have the ability, chances are the other skills will balance it out.”

This is how she organized Bloomin’ Days. “I decided there should be what I called captains to head each area of the event. They were a fantastic group of people to work with who believed in the philosophy of the event. To celebrate Summer, the flower baskets blooming, and of course to celebrate the new spirit of downtown. What better way to celebrate than with music, art, activities for children, a marching band and a bicycle parade. The captains organized the street musicians, the artists, kids activities, vendors and of course the volunteers. Organizing this event was one of the biggest joys of my life. I will never forget the experience. Anyone can do it. Just have the vision and go after it.”
Maria also organized the Adopt-a Basket Program while on the BID board, which helps support the breathtaking flower arrangements you see in hanging baskets and containers throughout the district. “Every day from the end of May to sometime in October I am just tickled seeing the beautiful flowers, knowing what they provide to our community.”
Maria tells the story of how she became involved with the beautiful flower arrangements displayed downtown: “I was already a Master Gardener. I responded to an ad to help with Earth Day clean up, so I helped with that. Then I became a member of Keep Kenosha Beautiful and I asked, “Who does the flowers downtown?” They were these little artificial flowers in these little baskets; they were plastic. They did not reflect the spirit of downtown. I was told that I needed to go talk to Ruth Granger, who was the manager of the downtown BID, and so I said okay. I waited about a year before I went and talked to her because I wanted to do a little bit of research. I figured the biggest obstacle was going to be how are they going to be watered. So I did a little bit of research about what could be done so that they would hold more water and all of these different things. Finally, a year later, I went and talked to her and I said I would like to plant the flowers for downtown. Hanging baskets were what I wanted to start with. She said okay and we started off with thirty baskets. That was seven years ago. And the flowers are still dancing in the streets! People tell me all the time how they bring visitors to downtown just to see the flowers. Isn’t that wonderful? Who doesn’t love flowers?

Tammy: So, tell me about Equinox.

Maria: Well, what do you want to know about it in terms of what do we do, how did it start?

T: Sure, how did it start.

M: Well, how it started was, I guess almost ten years ago, when I first became a massage therapist I rented space at the Kemper Center. Are you from Kenosha?

T: I know where the Kemper Center is. I live in Kenosha.

M: So I rented space over at the Kemper center in Ambrose Hall. I had two rooms there, but I already had the name Equinox. The reason I came up with that name was that I wanted something that meant balance. So Curzio is actually the one that came up with the name. Do you know what Equinox means? Equal night? There are two times of the year we have an equinox. We have one in March and we have one in September. And on an equinox is when there’s the same amount of light and dark. And then you have the winter solstice is when it’s the shortest day of the year and we have the most darkness and then the longest day of the year is in the summer when we have the most light. Isn’t that cool?

T: I knew solstices, but I didn’t know the– equinoxes? Equinoxes, is that right?

M: Yes. So I think it’s interesting how the planetary system works. From the longest day, in June (the solstice) and then the days progressively get shorter and so you have the equinox and then it goes to winter and the shortest day (solstice) and then another equinox in March. So, that’s what I’ve always believed in, is the necessity of balance. I try to balance everything in my life. I’ve never been one to be, you know, an extremist. For me it’s about balance. Balancing all the different components of my life in terms of the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual, I mean those all have to be balanced for me to feel grounded and secure with myself. So, my dream was to create a place where people could come, learn and experience balance. Equinox is filled with some of my favorite things, and it is a very safe, nurturing place to be.

T: What about your building? You moved from the Kemper Center to where you are now.

M: Seven years ago many native Kenoshans’ thought I was crazy (and still do) to have purchased a building downtown and especially across form the Dayton Residential Facility. And you know what? I would not want to be any place else in this city, than right where I am. More space would be nice so I could add a little cafe to satisfy my desire to create healthy organic meals. But to me, downtown is THE place to be. It is where one can FEEL the heartbeat of the city. But you talk to anyone who has traveled to other places even within our country, or those who have lived in other cities absolutely love the downtown. These residents or visitors appreciate it more than the natives. The obstacle here is the past. Some tend to remember how it was and miss seeing what is possible. I have a great vision for our downtown and I love meeting others of like mind who share this. It’s composition is quite diverse, as it should be. But getting back to Equinox, I have a great group of people working together, whether as massage therapist, esthetician or assistant, who love seeing the change, the transformation that occurs to our customer after visiting. Perhaps the visit was for a massage a facial or even to shop the Boutique, but once they have, they love it!

T: Francisco [Loyola] says you employ 85% of the artists in Kenosha. Are you an artist as well?

M: I do paint. I love it. I took a class from Brigitta Richter of the Kenosha Art Association in mixed media and continue painting with this technique. Where I am living right now does not have adequate studio space so my painting has been very limited, and I really miss it. Since I am passionate about flowers (particularly zinnias) I hope to photograph and paint like crazy this summer. But first I have to have a garden again. I miss working the soil so much, so this is first on my list. To grow from seed a magnificent plant is quite an amazing thing to do. This is one of my therapies. Of course music being a close second.

Maria is a dynamo…dare you to try to keep up with her. Francisco Loyola, David Heidi and I have recently been working with Maria to makeover the Equinox website, and it has been fun. Her energy is contagious and ready or not she will take you with her. Thanks Maria, and keep up your wonderful work and contributing to Kenosha.

The best term to describe Maria is passionate! The next term is focused. When she gets an idea in her mind, you had better get out of her way, because she is going to get it done! She is truly one of Kenosha’s prized citizens.

I can just hear Maria’s voice in the article!!! She is an inspiration to everyone who is lucky enough to meet her, let alone work with her. She makes us want to be the best we can be and I love her for that quality!

Ok, Maria, you are one of the human dynamos of Kenosha. You make it a better place, a much better place. Thanks.
