LADY GOURDIVA…

by Franco Tarsitano

melody-bigalke.jpg

Melody Bigalke admits she’s a scrapper and a survivor. This feisty, crafty lady is a multi-disciplined artist that brings something unique to whatever medium she works. Ceramics, print-making, jewelry but her most distinctive art are her gourds.

Melody was a young transplant from Racine to Kenosha. A graduate of Bradford, and art from UWM, she has spent 24 years at HR Block where she enjoys working with people and says that every tax return is different and enjoys that challenge. Melody, along with her two very talented and artistic daughters Lisa and Becky, contribute greatly to the Kenosha art scene and community. Together they organized a Christmas show this past year at the Southport Beach House.

Using Art to Heal . . .

by Colleen Kappeler

artishealing.jpg

It was a cold, snowy February night. I drove home from UWP in tears over the stories I had just heard; stories from women who had faced huge obstacles in life and had tremendous strength within them to overcome. It was overwhelming to hear, and even more overwhelming to realize the power within each one of them at having written those stories down.

On another cold, snowy day in January (let’s face it – this is Wisconsin so there are a lot of cold, snowy days!) I sat at a restaurant by the highway telling a writer the changes I felt she needed in the book she had given me to edit. My comments were not easy to hear, and I wondered how she was taking it all in when she reached across the table, grabbed my hand, and said, “Will you be my therapist?” Continue reading →

Inside the Music with Mark Harrod . . .

by Matt Specht

markharrod.jpg

The time draws near….

As you may or may not know, I am putting together 716 Fine Art’s new concert series, Inside the Music. We are kicking the season off next Saturday with WAMI Award-winning singer/songwriter Mark Harrod.

Most of you who know me will know Mark, as well. He has played in Copper and The Mahp. When I was in Rainy Day Crush, we shared the stage countless times. He is one of the nicest guys i know. I got the chance to play the guitar for a few gigs with him last summer, including Harborfest and Summerfest. It’s going to be interesting to hear how Mark got to where he is, and why he does the things he does. Things I myself don’t even know the whole story behind….

716’s Inside the Music concert series offers a different kind of concert. This is your chance to get to know these musicians on an entirely new level. Hear what got them started in music, why they write songs, where certain songs come from, and all kinds of things you won’t learn at a show in other venues.

Ticket prices are $10. Tables of 4 nearest the stage are $40. (Mark has almost sold all of those tables, so I suggest you hurry!) Four or more regular seats are $9 each. You can purchase your tickets at http://www.716fineart.org

Mark Harrod’s acoustic concert is March 29 at 7:30 pm
716 is located at 401 Main St, Racine.
Shows are all ages, but this is a fine art gallery. If you are under 21, please show respect!
Being an art gallery, it is also a non-smoking environment.

AMBITION . . .

A Poem by Bill Schroeder

Hurry, hustle, make haste, fly
become the she, the he, the hero within
Reach, extend , thrust, plunge
shatter, smash, pull down, wreck, metamorphize
Make yourself whirl against arrogant ridigity before the windup
hurry…….

Bowls & Books 2008 . . .

by Joe Barr

bowlsandbooks2008.jpg

A large, enthusiastic, and steadily moving crowd displayed civic spirit and good taste as they enjoyed a delicious array of soups offered by eight good-citizen restaurants at both the noon and evening edition of this year’s Bowls and Books. Laughter and music, auctions and prizes were notable at this well orchestrated festive occasion.
The noon restaurants included Fiesta Catering, Francine’s Catering, Franks Diner, Gateway Café, Marina Garden, Pazzo, Savannah’s Café, and Victoria’s Nautical Inn. In the tasting competition, Fiesta Catering was first, Franks Diner came in second, and Savannah’s Café finish third.
The evening featured Boat House Pub, Coffee Pot, Mangia’s Trattoria, Mo’s Café, Secret Garden Café, TG’s Pub, Twisted Cuisine, and Wine Knot. The Coffee Pot ranked first, TG’s won second, and Twisted Cuisine rated a third finish.
Each and every restaurant deserves our thanks and patronage for their time and efforts, offered with style and charm, to help further the renovation of the historic Rhode.

The winners were at noon: Fiesta Catering, Franks Diner and Savannah’s; in the evening were: The Coffee Pot, TGs and Twisted Cuisine.
