Background
Search Institute is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide leadership, knowledge, and resources to promote healthy children, youth, and communities. At the heart of the institute’s work is the framework of 40 Developmental Assets, which are positive experiences and personal qualities that young people need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. According to a Search Institute Report dated March 2006 which surveyed over 6000 Kenosha County youth, only 21% of respondents reported that they spend three or more hours per week engaged in music, theater or other arts. Of all the assets measured, “Creative Activities” had the lowest percentage in this survey.
Response
In order to address this issue, Kenosha County UW-Extension partnered with Art and Art Education students from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to create the S.T.ART (Students Teaching Art) program. The program is designed to bring the 4-H Arts experience to youth who live in low resource communities in the city of Kenosha. Art and Art Education students from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside serve as 4-H volunteer leaders in a six week program. At the end of the program youth participate in a face-to-face judging experience to share their work and what they have learned. In addition, all judged work will be displayed at Kenosha’s Harbor Market to celebrate and recognize the youth and their leaders.
Through a partnership between Kenosha County UW-Extension (UWEX), Kenosha Unified School District #1 (KUSD), Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha and the UW-Parkside Student Art Club, provides this unique opportunity to utilize local assets and talents to provide high quality, community based summer programming at the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Student volunteers from the UW-Parkside’s Art Club work in teams to provide art education to students enrolled in the summer 21st CLC program using an urban 4-H model with support and coordination from UWEX.
