The Big Bad Wolf has gotten a bum rap over the last four centuries. The many variations of the classic fairytale have painted him as a conniving, heartless beast that gobbles up grandmothers and red-cloaked little girls. Is it any wonder he’s been reviled? The Wolf (Willy the Wolf, to be exact) is here to set the record straight though, folks. You see, it was all a huge misunderstanding, like a game of “telephone” gone wrong. The story got twisted as it was passed along through the years, and he wants the truth to be told at last. He’s not big and bad at all—and he’s out to prove it in “Red Vs. The Wolf”, the first of the Lakeside Players’ children’s series at The Rhode.

One of the most appealing things about comics, at least for me, is that they can be produced quickly and cheaply. This is an invitation for experimentation, creativity and growth; as it cost very little to try new things. Unlike other visual mediums such as film, T.V. and Video Games it does not take a team of people and a large amount of money to make one. Creating a comic book can be a simple and low tech as grabbing a few loose sheets of computer paper, stapling them along their spine and drawing images in it with a ballpoint pen.
Though there is much fun to be had creating comics the low tech way, Comics now and days often make heavy use of computer software. The programs that are considered ‘industry standard’ are, for the most part, very expensive; far beyond the reach of someone who is just getting into creating comics (or any other type of digital art). However, there is an alternative.
Although, there are some common hardware elements used by many professionals these are not necessary. Remember, the tools do not make the artist; Better tools simply make the job easier. If you do not understand the fundamentals of drawing or composition a computer will only allow you to make mistakes faster, it will not correct them for you.

February 23rd, 2009 — EK73, AHA!, Capitol Art Program, AHA! Kenosha, ExposeKenosha

The opportunity to exhibit original artwork in legislators’ offices at the State of Wisconsin Capitol Building in Madison is open to all current artist members of Arts & Humanities Alliance of Kenosha (AHA! Kenosha) members. All wall-hung media 20 pounds or less will be considered. Please weigh your artwork, and do not submit work that is heavier, as the hanging system at the State Capitol is only rated for this weight. Artists may enter one art piece per exhibit up to 4 feet in any direction. NOTE: Submit work that is at least 14” up to 48” in any direction, not tiny pieces. A total of about 20 pieces will be selected for each exhibit. Although works will be available for sale, we consider this exhibition opportunity to be more for resume-building than a sales outlet.
