“I Had My Likeness Taken”

Civil War Museum presents “I Had My Likeness Taken,” portrait photographs of the Civil War, will be the focus of an exhibit opening Tuesday, June 2 at the Civil War Museum’s John M. Antaramian Gallery.

People have had their images captured in photographs for well over a hundred years. The Civil War brought a boom in photography, due to technical breakthroughs and an almost urgent sense of need to record the times and what they wrought. Loved ones exchanged pictures by mail. Homesick soldiers sent them to family, friends, and sweethearts, often accompanied by the phrase “I had my likeness taken.”

These carefully staged photographs display unspoken messages of patriotism, friendship, hope, pride, weariness, love and aggression. Bright-eyed young soldiers in fresh uniforms are depicted, along with ladies in their finest outfits and grizzled, war-weary veterans.

Alongside the original photographs, digitally enhanced enlargements give an intimate, up-close look at each portrait, while accompanying panels and displays show how the uniforms, clothing, weapons, and belongings were worn and used by the soldiers and citizens of the time.

The exhibit is scheduled to be on display through spring 2010.

Joe Brigante . . .

By Peggy Flynn

joebrigante.jpgI need to tell you about Joe Brigante, an entertainer that is hitting Kenosha restaurants lately. He is a singer and has appeared at Bombay Louie’s recently.

I believe he is someone you should check out. He sings everything from Sinatra and Dean Martin to Barry White, Elvis and Engelbert Humperdinck. He sings all of the beautiful old standards and also gets everyone up and dancing to some of the new music. He is wonderful!

He is playing at Bombay Louie’s again on Friday, 5/29 at 4PM and again on Saturday, 6/20 at 6PM.

Please spread the word and check him out.
