Join Us–Because Art Matters…

by John Bloner, Jr.

On Saturday, March 20, 2010, an Arts Matters meeting was held at Real Racine in Sturtevant, WI. Mark Fraire, Wisconsin Arts Board, served as the forum’s moderator. Arts Matters meets monthly at Racine and Kenosha locations.

In attendance were both individual arttists as well as representatives from local art and other creative organizations, such as the Photo Kenosha Group, Racine Theatre Guild, Choral Arts Society, Racine Symphony Orchestra, the Kenosha Writers’ Guild, the Racine Arts Council, the Be Exposed! Performance Series, the Bristol Renaissance Faire, the Dairy Statesmen, Lemon Street Gallery, Kenosha Community Media, Niemi Sculpture and more.

Participants described their individual or organization’s purpose and activities and outlined their collaborative efforts with other groups. Fraire asked the assembled to begin to track on how many hours they spend as in-kind contributions to their community. Participant Betsy Grindol commented that AT&T required its employees to track their time away from work, so AT&T could use that information to report on the productivity that AT&T, by association with its employees, brings to a community.
Fraire also asked that everyone write a paragraph on why they live in this area and, to those to whom it is relevant, why they moved into this area.

In order to can enjoy a productive meeting, leave it with a sense of accomplishment, and be energized for our future encounters and work together, an agenda has been drafted for the next meeting on Saturday, April 10th. It will be held at 1 p.m. at Lemon Street Gallery (4601 Sheridan Road) in Kenosha.

every picture tells a story
By Jennifer L. Tomaloff

This book began as a simple photo book with an experimental side and the idea that every picture tells a story, or at least should.

The experimental side entailed sending each of the writers included in this book a series of photographs, with the intent that they might write a short piece inspired in some way by each of the photos they were assigned. Every one of the writers included here gladly rose to the opportunity and far exceeded all expectations; every photograph was returned, each picture telling its story.

Contributors: Nicholas Michael Ravnikar, Ed Makowski, David Tomaloff, Matt Specht, Dana Roders, Jenny Bootle, Lisa Adamowicz Kless, and Nick Demske.

The book is available @ BLURB.
