Jessica Meyer’s “Sad Girls” …

by Rick McCluskey

I have never given much thought to what happens to newspapers once they’ve been read and discarded. I know a few made it to the bottom of my birdcage, but other than that, the post editorial journey usually ended in a container destined to a landfill.
Unless of course Jessica Meyers needed them. Then the journey was just beginning. That was obvious when I stopped in to visit her opening reception at 716 Fine Art Gallery in Racine, Saturday. Continue reading →

Take An Old Time Stroll With Me . . .

Part I
By S’Zanne M’Chel

good-old-summer-at-fair.jpg

I don’t know how you spent your first Sunday in June, but I went for a stroll amongst the artists at the Good Old Summertime Art Fair. I had spent the day before in the sweltering Bradford High School field house attending the graduations of my twin sons. They each attended a different school, so I was there in the afternoon and then again in the evening. It made for a very long and emotional day, as they are my “babies”. I needed a diversion from my thoughts of an empty nest, and figured the art fair would be just the ticket. Besides, the government wanted me to stimulate the economy. What better way than to invest my little stimuli check in the local art scene?
I did have a goal in mind when I set out, other than spending the beautiful day outdoors and not cooped up inside a building. The decorating duo helping me with my bathroom remodeling had recommended that I find something “black” to fit in with my retro style peachy-pink wall tiles, recently textured and painted dove grey walls, and the grey, white, pink speckled floor tiles. Complying with this directive seemed much easier than ripping out the tile and starting from scratch. So I packed my multi-colored shoulder bag with water, camera, and a sweater, and headed off to the fair. Continue reading →

Creative Juices . . .

“…Your muse might come and go, but it turns out there’s a more reliable source for inspiration. A farm in England grows creative people in a field, then carefully bottles their creative juices…”

Professional Acting Classes for Teens

Actor’s Craft holds classes in Milwaukee & Kenosha!

Teens can learn a professional approach to acting which enables them to create dynamic characters that bring scripts to life! Actor’s Craft brings Los Angeles caliber training to Wisconsin Teens at their studio in The Rhode Center for the Arts in Kenosha and at Bucketworks in Milwaukee. Professional Acting Technique and Teen Improv are two different approaches to developing a teenager’s acting skills for stage or on-camera.

Professional Acting Technique teaches teens to bring themselves more fully to their work for the natural, connected performance necessary for the revealing eye of the camera. Maureen Cashin Bolog is the only Acting Coach in the Great Lakes Area certified to teach the award-winning Chubbuck Technique used by Golden Globe, Emmy and Academy Award winners and nominees. This class also incorporates strategies used by Uta Hagen, Howard Fine and Larry Parke.

The spontaneity of Teen Improv will improve teenage actors’ listening and reacting skills. It requires intellectual, physical, and intuitive involvement which brings to light an actor’s unique characteristics. By identifying and honing these unique qualities, they learn to bring themselves to their acting work and create rich characters with vibrant relationships in their scenes. Directors value actors who are comfortable with improvisation since they can add dimension to the scripted material.

Teen Improv will only be held at Actor’s Craft in the Rhode Center for the Arts, 518 56th Street in Kenosha, WI. Classes are on Tuesdays from 1:30 - 3 p.m., June 24 - July 29th. Tuition is $110 for this six week class.

Professional Acting Technique will be held at Actor’s Craft in Kenosha for a one-week intensive, Monday through Friday, June 16 - 20, 9 a.m. until Noon, for $200. Milwaukee Area Teens can take the class at Bucketworks, 1340 North 6th Street, on Tuesdays, 4:30 - 6:45 p.m., June 17 - July 29th, for $200.
