July 13th, 2008 — EK42, Advocacy, ExposeKenosha
By Colleen Kappeler

“We need to pay attention to how arts happen and provide access for arts. I hope Kenosha continues to have access, by which I mean lots of different things happening so everyone who lives here has ways to participate.”
~Anne Katz
Executive Director of Arts Wisconsin, Anne Katz, will be visiting Kenosha on July 23rd. The Arts and Humanities Alliance of Kenosha (AHA! Kenosha) has planned a luncheon and a “conversation” with the director. “This is not a presentation,” Katz says, “Come prepared with questions and thoughts.”
Katz is always eager to travel the state to share local, state-wide and national information about the arts with Wisconsin communities. After the luncheon, she will go around Kenosha to see the arts that are alive here in our community. Her special purpose in this visit is to raise awareness and get people to be daily advocates for arts, not just in crucial times like budget cuts. “We are in the throes of election season and in the beginning of preparation for the 2009-2010 budget,” Katz explained, “I want to get people to speak up for the arts and to let the governor and legislature know what is happening.”
Kenosha, Katz says, is a good example of a community that is paying attention to the arts and investing in them. The harbor front development and museums, the galleries like Lemon Street, and theatre restorations are all very exciting and help provide activities for both residents and visitors. “When it comes to the arts,” Katz says, “it takes paying attention.” Kenosha has had very supportive leadership and good, exciting development because of this.

July 13th, 2008 — Theatre, EK42, Rhode Center For The Arts, Lakeside Players, ExposeKenosha
By Jennifer Heim

Eve Ensler’s striking stage piece opened on Friday, to a mostly female audience, at Kenosha’s Rhode Theatre. I believe I saw four men, one of whom was the husband of a cast member. Besides this peppering of any-generation testosterone, the age of the audience was all-together diverse; from a bright young college student celebrating her 19th birthday to fabulous, beautiful women in their 60’s and 70’s. There were single women, married women, mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers.
The show stars, Melissa Kelly Cardamone, Laura Larson, and Brandi Schuld, all from Kenosha. The three women brilliantly bring a series of real interviews to life on a simple black stage without the distraction of any fancy set or props. They portray a wide range of women from elderly spinsters to “sex workers”, and from rightwing American Christians to lesbians. As the title frankly states, they focus on matters not usually mentioned in polite society, covering (or shall we say uncovering) every aspect of the vagina and all that pertains to it. Each day thousands of people drive, bike and walk by the classic old brick buildings of Uptown Racine.
In years past, they were neighborhood grocery and drug stores, tailors and doctors’ offices, and their owners often lived upstairs with their families.
But shopping habits and demographics changed, and so did Uptown.
Today, although several businesses continue to thrive in Uptown, many of the sturdy old buildings sit unused or under-used. These are now the building blocks of the new Uptown Racine Arts District. Click HERE to continue reading.
