In recent years, Wisconsin has enjoyed an increasingly visible spot on the national cultural scene, gaining attention for the Santiago Calatrava-designed addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum and the construction of the Overture Center for the Arts, Madison’s downtown arts complex designed by Cesar Pelli. While these high-profile spaces by internationally renowned architects are certainly deserving of attention, it is worth remembering that Wisconsin’s rich and varied culture takes many shapes and is just as integral to the fabric of our small towns and rural areas as it is to major cities.
With that in mind, here’s a look at just a few of Wisconsin’s “hidden gems”–those places around the state, in setting both grand and simple, that boost our cultural quality of life.
The relaxed attitude of Lemon Street Gallery and ArtSpace, Inc., is in keeping with the red brick building’s former identity. The artists’ cooperative was once the Beer Depot, a liquor store that had been in business since the of World War II. On the day I was born, I came out looking both ways
- My Travelin’ Eye
I think my travelin’ eye (aka, my lazy, wandering eye) inspired me to be an artist from the start. I grew up in St. Louis, MO and spent a lot of time in a cardboard box drawing monsters. After studying illustration at the Kansas City Art Institute, I wrote and illustrated greeting cards at Hallmark for 6 1/2 years. A desire for adventure and change led me to the mountains of rural New Mexico where I live and work in just a slightly bigger box and still love drawing monsters. Fueled by chai and fresh, organic veggies, I am living out my dream as a freelance illustrator and children’s book author. My other passion is traveling, which I do as often as possible, with my husband and best friend, Patrick.
How did you get started in the illustration field?
When I was 19, I took my portfolio to the Kansas City Art Institute for ‘portfolio review day’. Click HERE to read the rest of the interview.
