A Map! A Map! My Kingdom for a Map! . . .

November 8th was Second Saturday in downtown Kenosha. Having missed the October event, I was eager to participate as patron of the arts, and shops, in this one. I followed the link from www.exposekenosha.com, to www.KenoshaSecondSaturdays.com and was quite excited to find how the event has grown over the course of a few short months. But, when I went to print off the participating locations, it was 9 pages long. Not something I could tuck into my handbag. Ok, that’s a lie, because that thing which hangs from my shoulder is large enough to be considered a ‘checked’ piece of luggage on some flights. What I was after was to have something to hand out to other interested parties when I talked it up. A flyer with a list and a map. A Map!

That would be my only disappointment in the evening. That and the fact three hours just wasn’t enough time for me to see it all.

I decided to start at the beginning. Lemon Street’s desire to restructure their artist’s opening receptions was the catalyst for the inception of Second Saturdays. An inspired idea if there ever was one. Same day every month. You know this. You mark your calendar. You count down the days. It becomes the carrot before your workhorse cart all week long. You structure your second Saturday so that you have plenty of time to fit in all your chores, rush home to spruce up, and then head downtown for an evening of culture, art, music and friendship.

But the best laid plans…as they say. Continue reading →

It’s live and it’s right here.

For fans of live music, Kenosha offers an exceptional array of entertainment opportunities within walking distance.

So says Waukegan, Ill., resident Chris Sipos, who runs the sound system and performs at the Monday night open mic at the downtown Nook Cafe and Gallery.

He’s been coming to the relatively new open mic night at the Nook for several months, and has attended Mark Paffrath’s Wednesday night open mic at TG’s Bar and Restaurant for years.

“I really like Kenosha,” said Sipos, a singer, guitarist and songwriter. “That’s why I’ve been coming up here so much. It’s like everyone you meet is in a band or is an artist or whatever.”

The downtown-area music scene is thriving, he said.
