By S’zanne M’Chel

When I attended the opening reception of the Dr. Seuss exhibit at Carthage on Friday, I was expecting the ever popular and once familiar characters from my offspring’s childhood bedtime stories. (Okay, maybe not their bedtime stories, as the cadence with which one must read Dr. Seuss does not induce sleep in children.) A Cat in a hat, some Wockets for my pockets, one Horton and his multitude of Who’s, some Sneeches and a Grumpy Grinch. What I didn’t expect was to see artwork of an adult nature more in line with those Seven Lady Godivas in Mom’s section of the library. This was most definitely NOT my children’s Theodor Seuss Geisel!
I was not there in time to catch the presentation at 5:00pm, Continue reading →
December 8th, 2008 — Heather Poyner, EK63, ExposeKenosha

From the “RHYTHM AND NEWS” Newsletter
I am sure this phrase has different meanings for us all, but for the Poyners and Rhythm in the Round, it sums up our personal and public lives in the past month. On Nov. 19 Roger had unexpected quadruple bypass surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital, Milwaukee. He is on the “Rapid Recovery” track and we thank all who have sent thoughts and support our way during this time of healing.
While Roger was in the hospital Rhythm in the Round also got a new lease on life: A one-year lease on a storefront space in downtown Kenosha. The timing was unexpected but the adventure has been embarked upon nonetheless. The new venture has been dubbed THE DRUM HUT located at: 5607 Seventh Ave., Kenosha. As karma would have it, this means Rhythm in the Round is still on Seventh Avenue! We are in process of renovating the space and plan a February 1, 2009 opening. All artisans–especially those who make indigenous-inspired instruments– are invited to contact Heather to find out how to showcase your wares at The Hut.

One of my favorite Web sites is Ted.com (Technology • Entertainment • Design = TED) where some of the world’s greatest thinkers and doers present their stories and ideas. TED is embarking on a new experiment and hopes that someone like you, dear reader, may help them.
Here’s how: First become acquainted with TED. New programs are available on a regular basis on this Web site. I first became acquainted with TED through a link at ExposeKenosha.com which directed me to a marvelous talk by symphony conductor Benjamin Zander . I later read his book, The Art of Possibility, which he co-authored with his wife, Rosamund, and am currently immersed in Mahler’s 9th Symphony, conducted by Zander. Zander is one of many creative thinkers who populate TED to share their wisdom and humor with you.
Next, consider holding a salon or book club around TED content. You could hold this activity in your home, at dinner parties, brown bag luncheons, or at the Kenosha Media Center, where you could screen TED videos on the Center’s giant screen. You could invite your friends and fellow Kenoshans to join you. Your friends at Kenosha Community Media could help you put this type of activity together. Anyone interested?
