RG Productions brings the classic American novel, John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath,” to life in a radio play staged at the Kenosha Civil War Museum on Saturday, March 13th @ 1 pm. The saga tells the story of Tom Joad and his family as they travel to California to escape the Great Depression and was selected at the novel for Kenosha’s BIG Read, sponsored by the Kenosha Public Library. The performance is free and open to the public and seats may be reserved beginning at 9 a.m. at the museum on the day of the performance.

While RG Productions has spent the past several years bringing Old Time Radio to the stage, this foray into American literature is a first for the intrepid group. “We’re really stepping out of our comfort zone for this performance,” says RG producer Nita Hunter. “We will be performing the Frank Galati, Tony Award winning stage play and it’s complete with original Grapes dialogue and depression-era Woody Guthrie music.” The Kenosha Public Library asked Continue reading →

A mural created by at-risk youth . . .

A mural created by at-risk youth last summer is a stunning new addition to the children’s wing of the Kenosha Public Library’s
northside branch.

The Mayor’s Youth Employment in the Arts program hired 42 youths last summer, who created public artwork including the mural that was recently installed at the northside library. They learned important job skills while beautifying our city’s public spaces with works of art.

Local artist Eric Houghton created the plans for the eight foot in diameter circular design, inspired by the dome at the downtown Simmons branch of the Kenosha Public Library. Houghton instructed a group of youth in art techniques during an eight-week period last summer. Their learning culminated with painting the mural.

Other YEA! Projects this summer included painting a mural at the K-Tech charter school and the creation of mosaic panels depicting the water cycle at the Kenosha Water Utility. Students also added an artistic touch to trash cans used at the local parks by painting themed designs.

The Mayor’s Youth Employment in the Arts program is entering its 15thyear this summer and is supported by the City of Kenosha along with private donations.
