If someone asked, “What are the arts?” Most people would quickly respond, “It’s music, visual art, dance, theatre, and writing.” What if the question was to describe the humanities? Would you know how to respond?
A concise description is that the humanities are the study of what human beings have thought, felt, and celebrated throughout the centuries and today. They grow out of an interest in language, arts, literature, thought, and history of humankind.
The humanities emphasize analysis, interpretation, and exchange of ideas, rather than the creative expression of the arts or the quantitative explanation of the sciences. The humanities include, but are not limited to, the study of language, literature, history, jurisprudence, philosophy, archaeology, comparative religion, ethics, and the history, criticism, and theory of the arts. Carolyn (Swede) Garland, a Nebraska native caters to art ravenous individuals; she renders beauty in every living thing imaginable, from landscapes to seascapes, animals to flowers; in essence, from the intricate amazing everyday ordinary, and not so ordinary scenes of life.
Step inside one of her creations, make it yours, savor the colors, and salivate the rich textures. Allow yourself to get lost in each piece as they take you to that place in time you always wanted to tread. Her paintings will bring you home or take you on a journey your heart won’t soon forget.
Swede is a feisty, determined woman. This mother of three, Grandmother of four, and great - grandmother to her precious baby girl Lily, lives life without regard to others expectations. Although she would never want to hurt anyone, she is spontaneous in telling you what she thinks. She radiates a youthful exuberance as she listens to jazz while she paints and is the epitome of creativity as her art comes alive. Her sense of humor is deliciously real. She is the red in the strawberry, and the spirit in the wine…
We are sitting in Swede’s Studio, drinking jasmine tea, in her home in Bristol, where her life is undressed. Her paintings grace every wall, from the very top all the way to eye level. Funky cabinets, painted with bright primary colors, and odd shapes smile back at me. There is no rhyme or reason to the décor, just splashes of color galore… I notice an old easel…
I love your studio, tell me about it…and where did you get that easel? Continue reading →

Usually the nursery rhyme “Black Birds In a Pie,” would definitely ruffle some feathers, but Julie Sepanski’s nest is full of pancakes. You’d think a mother of five boys would be more like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” but in this case mom creates art, and on occasion a piece or two does make it to the oven.
FRANCO: Name all your pancakes?
JULIE: My pancakes names are Madison-9ish, Austin-6, Alex-3, Carter and Tater-2.
FRANCO: How did you come up with the pancakes name? Continue reading →

Sandra Nowicki of Pegasus Studios has 16 pieces of 2-dimensional art in a solo exhibit at the Salem Community Library. The exhibit includes paintings in watercolor and gouache tempera, color drawings, pencil drawings and collages using artist-made paper.
When I asked Sandy where her inspiration comes from she replied,
“I am always responding to colors and forms in nature, images at art exhibits, and art history. Ideas and images gel in my mind from many sources and I interpret all this and it emerges as my own original collages, paintings and drawings. I create art as an expression of my inner energy, as symbols of my perception of the world. I can capture feelings and make them into art forms. I love the way collage, painting or drawing allows me to share all this beauty with other people.”

John Conlon and I first met in an abstract class at Lemon Street. At first John seemed a very shy person. Slowly his sparkle in the eye New England, dry wit surfaced. John’s sensitive, insightful comments of artists’ work, talent and personality integrated very easily into the gallery. There’s an appreciation for his thoughts and direction. His work exhibits these personal characteristics.
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Hartford Connecticut and lived most of my youth in New England. I graduated high school in Providence Rhode Island.
What brought you to Kenosha?
A smokey gray 2004 Honda Civic with mud guards and a sunroof, actually, I started to look for a place that taught encaustic painting and found out about Lemon Street.

Lemon Street Gallery’s 7th Annual Juried Exhibit represents artists from across Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Ohio, Iowa and Indiana in this diverse show of professional artwork. Not only a variety of neighboring states but also a rich variety of media is represented in this exhibition. This year, Harry Wirth, a professor of art and design at Northern Illinois University, and had, what would be to us the daunting task of being the juror for this exhibit.
Just how much artwork did you have to review for this show?
I reviewed 129 artworks by 47 artists. 42 pieces were carefully selected representing 22 artists. There was a 33% chance of being included in this show.

Melody Bigalke admits she’s a scrapper and a survivor. This feisty, crafty lady is a multi-disciplined artist that brings something unique to whatever medium she works. Ceramics, print-making, jewelry but her most distinctive art are her gourds.
Melody was a young transplant from Racine to Kenosha. A graduate of Bradford, and art from UWM, she has spent 24 years at HR Block where she enjoys working with people and says that every tax return is different and enjoys that challenge. Melody, along with her two very talented and artistic daughters Lisa and Becky, contribute greatly to the Kenosha art scene and community. Together they organized a Christmas show this past year at the Southport Beach House.
