“Creativity Just Waiting To Burst Out”–Catching Up With Javier C. Rivera

In my first interview with him, I described my friend, Javier C. Rivera, as a bit of a modern day Renaissance man. I wholeheartedly stand by that description, as Javier continues to amaze me and others with the depth and breadth of his work. Already an award-winning director and photographer, Javier is also a film maker, graphic designer, artist, writer, and musician now at work on his second album, performing as Tino Ghost. He’s also completed his second children’s book, Luna, and created a short film based on it. Recently, I asked Javier if he’d take a few moments to talk about Luna and his other projects, and he graciously agreed. Here’s a look at what this former Kenosha resident has been bringing to life.

LAK: Thanks for taking the time to do this again! You received word that the film for your first children’s book, Sometimes I’m Sad, has been nominated Best Film for the 2009 Kids First! Film Festival taking place at the Santa Fe Film Festival. Congratulations! It hasn’t been that long since you wrote Sometimes…, has it? So it’s pretty exciting that it’s getting attention this soon.

JCR: It’s great news about Sometimes I’m Sad and of course the attention for the book is nice too. Let’s hope it spreads to my next book, Luna.

LAK: You first wrote Luna in 2001, but just recently revised it and made it into a short film. Can you explain a little bit about what inspired you to revisit this project? Continue reading →

“Sweet, Clever, Dreamy Luna”

Author, filmmaker and former Kenoshan Javier C. Rivera has completed the final version of his short film, “Luna”. The film is a companion to Javier’s latest children’s book, of the same title. After her mother’s death, Luna finds solace in staring at the moon in the night sky, as her father reassures her that her mother is never far from her. Beautiful and moving text combine with striking illustrations in the film, enhanced by the voice talent of Noell Coet as Luna and original music by Tino Ghost. Welcome Back to the Outdoor Kenosha HarborMarket

Rain might have been in Saturday’s forecast, but luckily it held off long enough to help make the first day of the 2009 outdoor HarborMarket season a big success. Through patches of both cloudiness and sunshine, a bustling crowd was out enjoying the mild weather and charming Market atmosphere.

I got to the Market shortly before 1 p.m., and decided that since there were more vendors this season, my best bet was to do a “walk through” first, and then go back around again to buy the things that caught my eye. A good theory, but when it came down to it, it didn’t quite work; most everything was catching my eye that afternoon! There were a lot of familiar faces, but also new vendors, selling a fantastic medley of items. Continue reading →

After a long winter and some cool spring days, I think it’s safe to say that nearly everyone is bursting at the seams, ready to spend time outside enjoying the sunshine. The organizers and vendors of the Kenosha HarborMarket are no exception. After spending the cold season comfortably housed inside the beautiful lobby of the Rhode Center for the Arts, the Kenosha HarborMarket is heading back outdoors next weekend, for what promises to be another fantastic season.
