Meet Macyn Taylor…

She will be playing at the Main Stage at Bloomin’ Days
http://www.myspace.com/macyntaylor

My musical journey began with my Brownie troop when I was seven years old. My troop was going to have a talent show at a local nursing home. I said to my dad, who was co-leader of the troop, “Dad, I don’t have a talent”. He told me that we had an old guitar at home and he would show me a few chords so that I could sing a couple of Christmas carols. After the show, as we were all leaving, the activities director told my dad and me that she enjoyed my performance and asked if I would come back again sometime. My dad said the troop would be happy to come back again the next year, but that, if she would like, I could come back the next month and do a whole show for them by myself. I panicked, grabbing my dad’s arm and saying, “Dad, I can only play two songs”. He assured me that I learned the two songs so fast that I could easily learn twenty by the next month. He was right. We went to a different retirement home each week to develop my confidence. Then for St. Patrick’s Day, I learned some Irish songs and sang at some Irish pubs. From there I began playing, churches, festivals, farmer’s markets, coffee shops, fund raisers, charity events, memorial dedications, or any other place that we could find. I really enjoyed it. I was always telling my dad to find me more gigs. I started playing on the sidewalk after we took my sister to school in Madison. I saw the street musicians on State Street and asked my parents if I could give it a try. The next time we took my sister to school, I went out on State Street with a mandolin and a coffee can under the watchful eye of my brother. I actually made some money. That was also how the nickname “Sidewalk Superstar” got attached to me. From then on, whenever we would visit my sister, I would bring a banjo or guitar and play for a while on State Street. Then I got a gig playing on the UW Student Union Terrace Saturday evenings during the summers. A professor of music became interested in my performances, and suggested that I attend classes at the university. I was too young to live in Madison by myself and my sister lived in a sorority house, so I couldn’t stay with her. We decided that I would enroll at UW Milwaukee. It is within commuting distance of my house and has the only finger-style guitar major available in the world. This educational opportunity has allowed me to meet some of the top finger-style players in the world and has markedly improved my skills and technique. I am continuing my education at UWM and performing publicly every chance I get. I hope to see you at one of my shows.

The Mahp…

The Mahp (The Mark Allen Harrod Project) is a bipolar, southeastern Wisconsin based, original acoustic rock band led fearlessly by singer/songwriter Mark Harrod. While Harrod’s vocal delivery may more loosely resemble modern pop icons such as Dave Mathews and Rob Thomas, the themes of hope, longing, struggle and wonder tend to resemble the very same themes of late-70’s era Springsteen records.

The Mahp do more than play songs, they tell stories and share emotions, dreams and experiences in their music. There are no suspicious notions of racing through filler to get the hooks out. The arrangements are solid and well spoken, driven by Harrod’s articulate and aggressive acoustic guitar, the ethereal textures of Scott Cannaday’s electric guitar work, as well as Brad Hawes’ solid, sophisticated drumming and Chris Jakubiak’s proficiently smooth bass work.

The Mahp pride themselves on a very driving and spiritual live show that may be experienced equally well in acoustic or electric incarnations. Regardless of which you experience, you’ll likely want to relive again and again.

The Mahp will be opening the new concert series at 716 in Racine this Saturday, March, 29th. we will keep you posted.

The Kal Bergendahl Project performing “I Could Write A Book”

from the Kal Bergendahl Project myspace page.

“…About Kal Bergendahl Project

The Kal Bergendahl Project (KBP) is a group of several diverse and talented musicians spanning from Milwaukee to Chicago. The group’s founder and bassist, Kal Bergendahl, embarked on this project venturing to combine smooth, edgy jazz with soulful pop music in 2005. KBP steps into the worlds of vocal jazz and pop, as well as instrumental jazz (both traditional and smooth). The group’s sounds are reminiscent of Diana Krall and Kirk Whalum on the jazz side and Norah Jones, Maroon 5 and John Mayer on the pop side. With the unique and interesting blend of musical variety, KBP have created a musical setting that has attracted a wide audience and diverse fan base. This has given them the ability to perform at a wide range of musical venues. Because of the group’s diversity they can customize their live show to best suit a given venue/audience.

KBP gives Kal and the other members the opportunity to take the next step in their playing and creativity.

“I wanted to have a group which has the ability to have any member lead, either instrumentally or vocally,” he explains. “Even though I am the leader I pass around the melodies to everyone. My purpose is to bring two audiences together, the jazz and pop audience and expose them to the music they may not be as familiar with.”

FA LA LA THIS… A review

by Franco Tarsitano

ronjillanddove.jpg

Let me begin by telling you that Ron Kelly, who by the way is a great performer, a great humanitarian, and a great personal friend of mine, opened his Holiday Variety Show, “FA LA LA THIS,” on Friday night atop of cozy Carolyn’s Coffee Connection.

The evening line-up of performers: Dove was “hands on” with his/her letters to Santa, Mel Meskimen brought the angst of “giftgasm”. Sweetness Jill Paisted fingered a folksy guitar and carols “Christmas In Jail,” and “Rudolph the Red-nosed Wino”. Ron Kelly’s “Top Ten Secret Santa’s Gifts” and “Top Ten Self-Help Books to Give As a Gift” caught me thinking that I might have to make some returns right away.

Ron’s final monologue reveals an astute story-teller who manages to keep the audience compelled with an unexpected twist. We are reminded that the Holidays have their innocence, tragedies and everything in between. “FA LA LA THIS” is a gift to Kenosha.
