Samir Husni, the academic world’s “Dr. Magazine,” who keeps track of this sort of thing, recently reported the birth of 715 magazines during the past year.
Well, now there are 716. Welcome, please, The Bathroom (”A Good Place to Read”), a new poetry magazine published by Racinian Nicholas Michael Ravnikar.
A couple of caveats up front: This is not the poetry of Robert Frost. Nor is it a magazine like, say, George Plimpton’s Paris Review, that you actually could carry into the bathroom. Continue reading →
Poetry Roundtable at JavaVino
April 13th, 2008 — EK29, Racine, Poetry
Sponsored by the Racine Public Library, The Poetry Roundtables are a monthly event held at Java Vino wine and coffee shop ( 424 Main St. downtown Racine) and sponsored by the RPL. This is a program free to the public in which, each month, the works of a different contemporary poet will be read and discussed in a setting conducive to individuals with varied levels of poetry experience . Photocopies of the poetry will be provided at the event, but it is recommended participants review some of the work in advance.
This month’s Poetry Roundtable (Thursday, April 17th) will focus on the career of American poet Frederick Seidel. Seidel is not for the faint of heart. He has had a long, strange career, is independently wealthy and notoriously ultra-private (except in his poetry, that is). Very little is even known to the public about Frederick Seidel aside from what’s found in his writing. He is a founding editor of The Paris Review, has had work appear in The Best American Poetry and is as equally abhorred by critics as celebrated.
AMBITION . . .
March 23rd, 2008 — EK26, Kenosha Writers' Group, Poetry
A Poem by Bill Schroeder
Hurry, hustle, make haste, fly
become the she, the he, the hero within
Reach, extend , thrust, plunge
shatter, smash, pull down, wreck, metamorphize
Make yourself whirl against arrogant ridigity before the windup
hurry…….

Fa-La-La THIS Ron Kelly
December 2nd, 2007 — Poetry, Theater, Performer, Visual Artist
by Tammy Peacy

He’s a self-promoting, women’s foundation garment peddling, performing and visual artist. It’s Ron Kelly.
As I arrange myself in a chair upstairs at Carolyn’s Coffee Connection, I push a decorative throw pillow to the side.
“I think pillows [on furniture] are just to cover people’s bellies to be honest with you,” Ron quips.
“Yea, honesty!” I think to myself. And while we’re being honest, “That’s exactly what I usually do with the pillow! But nobody is supposed to know that’s what the pillow in my lap is for.”
Ron Kelly is offering “the perfect antidote to the inevitable Ryan Seacrest holiday special.” Fa-La-La THIS started in Chicago with a theater company called Hell in a Handbag.

“Cool Shade and Sweet Water” Meet Marianne Zirkle
November 25th, 2007 — Poetry, Writer
by Bill Schroeder

I worked with Marianne on the Coats for Kids program when she was a department head at Women and Children’s Horizon’s and recently found she had a book of poetry published this June. The title is “Cool Shade and Sweet Water.”
Normally, I’d start and end the interview with the same person, but not this one because I started out interviewing Marianne, but she quickly transposed into Namarine.
Marianne works as an Employment Support Specialist at the Ellsworth Prison in Union Grove, helping the women reintegrate into their communities. Namarine writes wonderful introspective Poetry. As Marianne spoke, Namarine became a powerful draw for me, a little like Kahlil Giban in his book “The Prophet”.
Bill: Do you use life experiences in your writing? Continue reading →
