It’s live and it’s right here.
For fans of live music, Kenosha offers an exceptional array of entertainment opportunities within walking distance.
So says Waukegan, Ill., resident Chris Sipos, who runs the sound system and performs at the Monday night open mic at the downtown Nook Cafe and Gallery.
He’s been coming to the relatively new open mic night at the Nook for several months, and has attended Mark Paffrath’s Wednesday night open mic at TG’s Bar and Restaurant for years.
“I really like Kenosha,” said Sipos, a singer, guitarist and songwriter. “That’s why I’ve been coming up here so much. It’s like everyone you meet is in a band or is an artist or whatever.”
The downtown-area music scene is thriving, he said.

Our 4th Open Mic night at the The Nook Café & Gallery was a great success (September 15, 2008). We had great musicians, an appreciative crowd and delicious cheesecake. Pat tried out his new Blueberry Cheesecake recipe on us and I think its my new favorite in the Pat Garrett line-up!
As for the show, we were graced with the awesome talents of Kerry Spitzer and Janice Swartz first thing on the line up. They played beautifully and their positive support of the Open Mic and other musicians is a beautiful thing.
Don Hazelwood and Rogers Randle Jr. were next and were great, providing us with some old school country.
Pat Garrett also gave us some old school country. I always love his version of “A Boy Named Sue”. And of course he gave in and played some of his own funny tunes by my request. Pat always thoroughly entertains us as well as filling us up with yummy Cheesecake!
Josie Rodriguez read some stirring original poetry and Next on the line-up was Chris Sipos who is an amazing musician who I swear knows every song in the world! He did some originals and an awesome version of Talking Heads “Nothing But Flowers”. I’m a huge Heads fan, so that made me happy.
Larry “SugarBear” Thomas played some awesome keys with Jason Kent on guitar and Roger on Sax again. He entertained us with some of his beautiful original pieces.
We wrapped things up, said goodnite, but then Jason and Chris decided to give us a Pink Floyd tribute to honor Richard Wright ,the keyboardist who passed away yesterday. It was so COOL!
So it was really a wonderful night full of good music, laughter and yummy food!

Open Mic Nite at The Nook was a huge success. What a relief and what fun!! You, who missed it, missed awesome music and delicious cheesecake and a fun crowd.
We had amazing musicians show up and entertain us and we gorged ourselves on Pat Garrett’s Cheesecake… Good times.
Thank you to my friends and to the musicians who came. We had Macyn Taylor! She is only 14 years old but plays better than some old pro’s… It was TRULY an HONOR to have her there and to hear her play again….
Kerry Spitzer and Janice were amazing as well. Kerry has been so supportive of the Open Mic and I owe him MUCH thanks!
Then Pat Garrett made us all laugh and cry with his superb songwriting and performing skills, as well as filling our bellies with Cheesecake!
Evan Priday played next and was awesome as usual. He did “Rising Water” by my request and it was beautiful, I love that song Evan… Cole Garcia accompanied him a few songs… Yay Cole!
And last but not least Don Miller from Acoustic Soul played guitar and sang, which Ive never heard him sing before by himself.. YOU were GREAT Don! Jason Kent joined him for a few and together they provided some comic relief… It was cute…
This week the lighting will be WAY better next time and not clinical… See you there!!

There’s an appetite for art at this downtown eatery.
The Nook Cafe and Bakery is now the Nook Cafe, Bakery and Art Gallery.
That’s a mouthful - like the tasty fare the downtown locale offers. And it’s now an eyeful, with some 30 pieces of artwork on display at any given time.
