OVER OUR HEAD PLAYERS PRESENT SEDARIS CHRISTMAS COMEDIES . . .

othch.jpg

In December, Over Our Head Players presents a special holiday bonus: an evening featuring two popular David Sedaris Christmas comedies. The edgy The Santaland Diaries is paired with equally unorthodox Season’s Greetings in a limited engagement. This special holiday program runs just two weekends, December 12-20, at the Sixth Street Theatre, 318 Sixth Street, Downtown Racine. Reservations are available through the box office, (262)632-6802. Tickets are $15.

These two irreverent holiday tales are sure to add some spice to the Yuletide sweets. The Santaland Diaries launched David Sedaris’ career with his bitterly funny account of working as an elf in Macy’s SantaLand. His true story includes vivid descriptions of the Retail Holiday Season – from eccentric Santas to maniacal moms. Shortly after arriving in New York City without a job, David becomes an elf. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa’s workshop, he becomes battle weary and bitter. Taking consolation in the fact that some of the other elves were television extras on One Life to Live, he grins and bears it, then shares his catty observations with us. A sardonic, merrily subversive tale, David Sedaris’ humorous and acerbic account has become an ‘anti-holiday’ cult classic. Continue reading →

The Vagina Monologues, a review. . .

By Jennifer Heim

Eve Ensler’s striking stage piece opened on Friday, to a mostly female audience, at Kenosha’s Rhode Theatre. I believe I saw four men, one of whom was the husband of a cast member. Besides this peppering of any-generation testosterone, the age of the audience was all-together diverse; from a bright young college student celebrating her 19th birthday to fabulous, beautiful women in their 60’s and 70’s. There were single women, married women, mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers.

The show stars, Melissa Kelly Cardamone, Laura Larson, and Brandi Schuld, all from Kenosha. The three women brilliantly bring a series of real interviews to life on a simple black stage without the distraction of any fancy set or props. They portray a wide range of women from elderly spinsters to “sex workers”, and from rightwing American Christians to lesbians. As the title frankly states, they focus on matters not usually mentioned in polite society, covering (or shall we say uncovering) every aspect of the vagina and all that pertains to it.
