Secrets on the Family Farm

nick-cibrario.jpg

A book by Nick Cibrario

After the success of his “Garden of Katmandu Trilogy”, Dominic Cibrario is ready with his new book which focuses on Wisconsin farm life circa 1951.

“The characters are all people we can readily identify with (well….maybe not after we get to know them), because they are all right out of Middle America. If you are looking for stories about 4-H clubs and the dignity of tilling the soil through the sweat of one’s brow, you will be disappointed. The novel is both a fictive ethnography of middle American rural life – as it is really lived, according to Cibrario, not as it is imagined or portrayed in Norman Rockwell paintings – and a sobering account of the way the effects of the war continue for decades to form and distort the lives of those who were active in it.”

Excerpts from a review by Jim Fisher, Anthropologist at Carleton College in Northfield Minnesota

Nick received his BA from the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse and has an MS from the College of Racine. He also did graduate studies at Marquette University and the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been on display at the Anderson Arts Center, the Wustum Museum and the Kenosha Public Museum. He has studied with teachers such as Tom Hoffman and Gerhard Kroll and is a long-standing member of the Kenosha Art Association and the Racine Art Guild. Continue reading →

Secrets on the family farm . . .

The latest novel of Dominic Cibrario.

secretsonthefamilyfarm.jpg

During July of 1951 Adam is traumatized on the family farm in Wisconsin. He’s unable to tell his parents what happened to him in the barn. Burdened by his secret, the ten-year-old boy begins to exhibit bazaar behavior. His worried parents don’t know how to help him. They are preoccupied with earning a living and their own secrets. Adam’s father, Giovanni Montanya, leaves the farm each morning to work on the assembly line at Nash Motors with Uncle Pete. Both men were drafted into the army after Pearl Harbor and suffer from the horrors of the war as the Korean War escalates. Adam’s mother, Gertrude, drives the truck daily to the Farmers’ Market to sell vegetables. Sometimes she takes Adam, his brother, Karl, or Grandma with her. The entire family works hard but their routine is harsh. Giovanni escapes by going to Jim’s Bar while the women and Aunt Clara seek comfort in the Catholic Church. As the secrets are revealed, each person is changed for better or worse in this novel.

Logic’s End . . .

logic-l.jpg

In the near future, when planetary space travel has become possible, a NASA planetfinder telescope discovers a planet that has the necessary requirements to produce life. Rebecca Evans, a staunch evolutionary scientist, is one of the people chosen to visit the planet. After arriving on the surface, she is kidnapped and finds herself caught in the middle of an ongoing planetary war between alien clans. In an effort to escape, she makes a deal with one of the clans to exchange precious technology for her freedom. She soon finds out that on Kaesh, you cannot trust anyone. For on this planet, survival of the fittest is played out to its logical end. Her journey of discovery turns into a search for truth as she begins to question the very foundations of all that she believes about the origin of life.
