It is a Saturday afternoon and once again I am sitting at an art gallery watching my mom draw another portrait. She yells at her art work for not turning out the way she wants and then takes a break, going outside while I sit watching the gallery, looking at the amazing pictures and paintings. She comes back in and works on her portrait again. She starts to get it to work then gets mad again and side tracked. I watch it all. We come back home and she goes to finish her commission painting. I watch my mother paint and sketch. (more…)

It is not often that one stumbles upon a ruin of historic and cultural value in Kenosha. But, that is what happened to me last year when I took my first tour of the Kenosha Theatre at 5913-6th Ave. It was a mind-blowing experience. As I climbed a large curving staircase, ornate columns and faux castle walls came into view revealing a second floor lobby. The grandeur of the scene, combined with the crumbling plaster and peeling paint reminded me of a sunken luxury liner. It was like diving on the Titanic. The detail of the work was exquisite. For example, lights were laid out in the ceiling in the main auditorium by members of the U.W. Madison astronomy department in such a way as to mimic the summer night sky above Spain. (more…)

Sandra Nowicki of Pegasus Studios has 16 pieces of 2-dimensional art in a solo exhibit at the Salem Community Library. The exhibit includes paintings in watercolor and gouache tempera, color drawings, pencil drawings and collages using artist-made paper.

When I asked Sandy where her inspiration comes from she replied,

“I am always responding to colors and forms in nature, images at art exhibits, and art history. Ideas and images gel in my mind from many sources and I interpret all this and it emerges as my own original collages, paintings and drawings. I create art as an expression of my inner energy, as symbols of my perception of the world. I can capture feelings and make them into art forms. I love the way collage, painting or drawing allows me to share all this beauty with other people.”

Actors, musicians, crew, and director, everyone really likes this play. It is Golliwhoppers, the last of the very successful Children’s Series this season at the Rhode. There is energy, enthusiasm, and laughter in their work. The only problem for this play will be figuring out who is having the most fun, the performers or the audience.

GOLLIWHOPPERS is a wonderful retelling of four “tall tales”–The tales thread through our American heritage from the outrageous comic story, Big Jesse Febold Ebenezer Chopalong, to the mythic Native American legend of The Sun Snatchers, a hilarious Appalachian tale of greed, Goll-Golli-Gee and a deep southern romp about the tiny little Knee-High Man.
